What is the Spanish One-Way Immersion Program?
¿Qué es el programa bilingüe de español?
This program is a Dual Language One Way Immersion program designed for English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish. This program offers the opportunity for students to learn both in their primary language and in English. The program begins in TK/Kinder through 5th grade here at ASGE.
Nuestro programa bilingüe de inmersión unidireccional está diseñado para alumnos de aprendices en inglés a los que su lenguaje primario es el español. Este programa ofrece la oportunidad para que los alumnos puedan aprender en su idioma primaria y en inglés. El programa empieza en TK/Kinder y corre hasta quinto grado aquí en ASGE.
How is Spanish and English taught in the classroom?

We follow a 50/50 model in which students are learning content in both languages 50% of the day in Spanish and 50% in English. We support our students with grade level standard based instruction and support them in their pathway towards biliteracy.

English Learners and English Proficient students receive instruction in English and Korean in the same classroom to develop academic proficiency in both languages beginning in kindergarten through fifth grade. Dual Language Programs are also known as two-way immersion programs. The KDLP program at ASGE is academically rigorous and challenging.

Both English Learners and English-proficient students are mixed in the same classroom to promote bilingualism, biliteracy, and multiculturalism. Both languages are encouraged to be used equally for instruction at all grade levels. Students are held to the same high academic standards. Heterogeneous and homogeneous grouping strategies are used to promote language development and to develop literacy skills in English and Korean.

Knowing a second language is important given the global nature of today’s job market. Besides cultural awareness and tolerance, the students participate in the arts through visual arts and school performances. These may include Korean drumming, and taekwondo.

Language and Literacy in English Acceleration Program (L2EAP)
Students in the Mandarin FLES (Foreign Language Elementary School) program will receive Mandarin instruction with the goal of developing basic proficiencies in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. China's present and past cultural aspects are explored. This unique program will give students an opportunity to learn about Chinese culture and compare their own cultures to find similarities and differences.
